  33. comp.home.misc is a USENET newsgroup devoted to discussions of perspectives

  35. and options in research, development and use of information-technology, 
  36. telecommunication and automation for the private home.

  47. WHICH ARE THE MAIN PURPOSES OF THIS GROUP ?

  49. It shall function as a forum for researchers and developers, who are 
  50. concerned with the problems, conflicts and constructive potentials cutting 
  51. across the main areas of home-oriented technology research and development,
  52.  
  53. i.e. bridging between the main areas of 'Advanced Home Technologies', 
  54. 'Communication and Telematics', 'Economic and Politics of Home-oriented 
  55. information technology' and 'Cultural and social Impact on everyday life'.
  56. It shall serve also as a forum to announce and prepare inputs for relevant 
  57. conferences (-such as the Copenhagen Conference on Home Oriented 
  58. Informatics, Telematics and Automation: HOIT 94 Reconstituting OIKOS) and 
  59. serve as forum for further discussions on topics highlighted on such 
  60. occasions.

  63. SOME OF THE THEMES FROM THE OUTSET EXPECTED TO BE TREATED IN THIS GROUP?

  66. *    The changing position and importance of households in the new social 
  67.      and economic structure of the global information and communication 
  68.      society
  69. *    Strategies for creating professional, public and political awareness of 
  70.      the converging potentials and implications of constructive Home-
  71.      oriented technological innovations for everyday life and for social, 
  72.      cultural, educational, health-, energy- and economic policies.
  73. *    Ways of organising relations between sufficiently cross-disciplinary 
  74.      research and sustainable product development. 
  75. *    Relevance for developing countries and cultural diversities

  78. HOW COME, THAT THE NAME OF THE GROUP IS SO GENERAL AND BROAD?

  80. We feel the need to have a crossdiciplinary research oriented forum 
  81. cutting across all home-related issues related to information technology.
  82. On the other hand we are aware of the very wide spectrum of different 
  83. interests pertaining to narrower, more specialised and practical issues. 
  84. The formation of comp.home.misc will make it possible to discuss the 
  85. further structuring of the domain, and to locate potential moderators for
  86. parallel groups. We expect to expand the set of groups as the volume of use
  87. grows and as the usage patterns emerge.

  89. This may prove the need for future new groups with names like: 
  90. comp.home.ai, comp.home.automation, comp.home.education, comp.home.energy, 
  91. comp.home.medicine, comp.home.multimedia, comp.home.telecom, comp.home.work

  93. etc. But we think it will be important to ensure an internal structure 
  94. between such groups, so that there will continue to exist a forum, where 
  95. the total electronic situation of the private home in its social 
  96. informational embedding is kept in view.

  101. Comp.home.misc will be moderated by Kresten Bjerg, Psychological 
  102. Laboratory, University of Copenhagen, with an advisory panel from IFIP 
  103. WG.9.3.

  108. WHY IS THE GROUP MODERATED ?
  109.  
  110. With the very general title, it must be expected that quite a few postings 
  111. will arrive, which are of little relevance to the purpose of the group. 
  112. Moderation makes it possible to re-direct such postings to other, and more 
  113. relevant fora, while also accumulating empirical evidence concerning the 
  114. needs for new "home groups".

  116. The moderator will also attempt to establish conventions concerning the use
  117.  
  118. of the subject line, i.e. insertion of flag-strings to permit ease of 
  119. orientation, establishment of systematic threads and development of 
  120. preliminary internal domain structures.
